The value of any business beyond the first few million dollars is its customer base and sales channels. To create a lot of value, you need a lot of scale. In a startup, simplicity and focus are the only means to survival, so picking a single customer segment is key -- consumer, SMB, or large enterprise. No startup can directly serve more than one. I will go through each, with company examples and mechanisms to address the segments outside the focus.
